  • Comments Thread For: Schaefer Expects Blood and Guts in Ponce vs. Mares Clash

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer expects nothing but fireworks on April 20th, when undefeated Abner Mares (25-0-1, 13KOs) pursues his third divisional title by moving up to the featherweight division to challenge WBC featherweight champion Daniel Ponce De Leon (44-4, 35KOs) in a Showtime televised main event at the Home Depot Center in Carson, California.

Frustrated with his inability to secure a unification match with WBO champion Nonito Donaire, Mares vacated his WBC super bantamweight title and announced his intention to move up in weight.

For Schaefer, Ponce De Leon vs. Mares brings back memories of the four-fight series between Israel Vazquez and Rafael Marquez. Two of those four matches were held at the Home Depot Center. [Click Here To Read More]

schaefer forgot to mention battered balls. Mares can't fight without going low at least 20 times a fight.

Gary Russell Jr. Would knock both of these bums out. Mares ducked Leo Santa Cruz because Leo would've put them paws on him.

Good point. Its hard to get excited for a Ponce fight. Especially when you're expecting some type of foul to end it. That's 2 in a row now, Gamboa and Gonzalez. Nonetheless can't wait to see Mares debut at 126. He can box and if he sticks to it (which he needs to vs the bigger guy) he has the fight in the bag.

This 120 pounder is going to show Browner how he was supposed to fight and beat Ponce DeLeon.
It just comes to show you how much of a made up fighter Broner is fighting guy two weight class below his.
Go Mares show them how is done just like you did when you beat Darchinian, Moreno, agbeko, and other fighter of such caliber.
Has Santa Cruz or Gary Russel Jr. ever face such as stiff opposition... I wonder???

So let me get this straight. You honestly think Ponce or even Mares can beat Gary Russel jr? Or are you just saying he hasn't fought anyone. Because I agree he hasn't fought anyone, and if he fought Ponce or Mares they still wouldn't be considered legit fighters.

Would've rather seen Mares/Santa Cruz, but this is a pretty good scrap.
