    Pacquiao gets 'five' from Roach

BAGUIO CITY, Philippines – Manny Pacquiao is making great progress in his training that Freddie Roach has already given him a passing grade after only a week in the gym.

“A five (out of 10),” said Roach after doing the mitts with the Filipino pound-for-pound king Monday afternoon before a mix of media and fans at the Shape Up Gym.

With the fight with Shane Mosley exactly 47 days away, Roach feels they are almost halfway through the eight-week buildup.

The arrival of sparmates Shawn Porter and David Rodela from the US is a sign Pacquiao’s training will enter a crucial phase pretty soon and Roach said the banging of bodies should begin early next week.

Another surprised visitor during the workout was Top Rank chief Bob Arum, who arrived here solely for the purpose of holding a day with the media and checking on the status of his Pacquiao’s preparation for the May 7 battle with Mosley at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

“It’s incredible seeing Manny train like this,” said Arum, joined here by his step-daughter Dena DuBoef.

But Arum is not looking past the 39-year-old Mosley, who, like Pacquiao, is also in the thick of training in Big Bear, California.

“If Mosley is fighting somebody who is very defensive, his age will be a factor, because he‘d be trying to catch Manny,” said the Hall of Fame promoter.

“But Manny is somebody who plays inside Mosley’s game because he comes to fight,” added the 79-year-old Harvard-educated lawyer.

Roach, meanwhile, said he will try to maintain the number of mitts session with Pacquiao for fear of course of seeing his No. 1 fighter peak too soon.

Pacquiao is so into the zone of training that conditioning coach Alex Ariza told Arum that, this early, Pacquiao is already within the welterweight limit of 147 lbs.

    “146 (lbs),” said Ariza.

    “Unbelievable,” quipped Arum.
