The ref should be held accountable for his role in Prichard's tragic condition or these types of life threatening injuries will persist throughout professional boxing. He allowed Colon's opponent, Terrel Williams to repeatedly hit Prichard in the back of the head the entire fight until it was so blatantly obvious and continuous that even the ref, Joseph Cooper, who was either bought off or completely incompetent, deemed it suitable to take away a point. This did absolutely nothing to change the horrifying outcome as the damage was done and Williams was able to continue throwing and landing disgusting rabbit punches until he landed the final, devasting blow that felled Prichard, was incorrectly ruled a legal knockdown and arguably did the lethal damage that led to his current condition.
In my honest opinion, that ref, Joseph Cooper, should not only have been banned from ever refereeing a fight again but should also be charged with at least accessory to manslaughter because his lack of control of the fight, inability or unwillingness to prevent foul blows and disregard for the risk involved with a fighter taking repeated punches to the back of the head was a direct cause of Prichard Colon's current state.
What an absolute travesty and yet another unnecessary black mark on the legitimacy of pro boxing.
