  • Comments Thread For: Photo: Adamek-Cunningham II Controversial Scoring

There were two scoring mishaps this evening at the sold out Sands Casino Resort in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania. The first time around, Tomasz Adamek (48-2, 29 KOs) and Steve “USS” Cunningham (25-5, 12 KOs) were announced to have fought to a draw by legendary announce Michael Buffer. A moment later Buffer announced that a score of 115-115 was actually 115-112 in favor of Adamek, which made the Polish star the winner by split decision. Later it was revealed that another scoring mishap had taken place when it was disclosed that 115-112 was actually 115-113 for Adamek. The other judges had it 115-113 Cunningham and 116-112 for Adamek.

Cunningham not really the home fighter when you consider who is with the promoter and who sells tickets in the States.

And two of the judges scoring the tenth for Adamek is just about as dumb as can be.

I saw Ukranian prospect Stas Kashtanov get robbed against Hungarian Karoly Balzsay in the Ukraine.

There's a post showing up on the story's comment list about the commission not caring that one of the judges added her score wrong, though for some reason that post isn't showing up in a form that I'm able to reply to it. I thought that I'd clarify, as someone who has been involved in the judging process. Judges don't add their scores. They turn in individual cards for each round to the referee immediately after the round. The ref collects the cards and hands them to the supervisor, who writes the scores on a paper like the one shown in the photo and adds them together. It's the commissioner, then, that appears to have added wrong.

The judge is only guilty of...well...being a terrible judge. And the rounds were scored so randomly that I honestly don't even think these two blind mice were corrupt or biased. If so, there's no way either of them would have given Cunningham round 1, which legitimately could have gone either way. They just truly don't know what the hell they're doing.

This was easily the worst year for boxing judges in recent memory.
