  • The Real 'True Detective': Satan Worship, Ritualized Child Molestation In Louisiana

Ten years ago, the town of Ponchatoula, Louisiana, was traumatized when a local church's secret Satan worship, ritualized child molestation, and animal sacrifices came to light. Rust Cohle may be a fictional character, and time may not really be a flat circle, but that sounds an awful lot like the events of the first season of HBO's hit True Detective. In this episode of our brand-new series The Real, we went down to Ponchatoula to meet Stuart Murphy and Tom Tedder, two law enforcement officials who helped put these terrible, true events in Ponchatoula's rearview mirror.

Devil worshipping and child molestation/animal sacrifice/sex with animals seem to go hand in hand. It should be illegal in my opinion, at least that version of the "religion."

According to a friend who researches occult practices, sacrifices of any living animals/persons or any kind of harm to other people, sexually or physically, is not promoted, encouraged or taught. She went on to state that true Satanism is practiced according to a set of rules which preach that whatever energy you give out to the world, you will receive 10 fold.

Usually, when you have self proclaimed "Satanist" that engage in illegal behaviour such as molestation, rape, murder, etc, those practitioners have created their own warped view of how Satanism is practiced. It's usually people who were attracted to the negative stigma of Satanism more than the actual "religion."

There are different versions of occult beliefs.

Some of them might claim to be ethical but there are others which encourage practitioners to hate "God" and to break taboos because that gives them power. And there are few bigger taboos than raping babies so that's conceivably how this becomes a part of their rituals.

Any religion like that needs to be made illegal in my opinion. Especially when you have law enforcement officials being implicated like in Ponchatoula....you have to take protective steps so that society's positions of power aren't infiltrated or compromised by cults.

I cant help but think of Catholic priests when it comes to religion and child rape.
I know its quite different from being part of the actual belief system and rituals, but banning religions is a slippery slope.
This case sounds more like a warped ritualised paedophile ring.

If 'devil worship' was made illegal, what happens to teenagers drawing devils and pentagrams on their school books?
Look at what happened to the West Memphis three. 3 teenagers wrongly convicted of child murder because they were into heavy metal and read Aleister Crowley.
                It becomes a witch hunt.
After spending 10 years in prison and being repeatedly raped, they were released.
