Those are the games that stand out for me. If we were to stretch the time window a little wider, I would include Quake2 and Half Life.

Quake2 and Half Life were the true beginnings of everything great. Quake 2 was fantastic for inviting Multiplayer fun, stability and popularity on a massive scale. I can remember scanning gamespy and seeing it have upwards of 50000+ servers at one time worldwide, with the top 2000 being full all the time. Half life was the first to bring a great storyline to the FPS experience, something Deus Ex perfected.
