  • Comments Thread For: Martin Murray is Enraged: “I Should Be Topping Bills!”

With the middleweight division about to come to life in the weeks ahead former world title challenger Martin Murray 24-0-1 (10) appears to be in limbo. After defying expectations and gaining a draw against WBA champion Felix Sturm last December the St. Helens native was expecting doors to be blasted open with opportunities landing at his feet. A mooted fight with Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. fell through due to visa issues leaving Murray fighting Frenchman Karim Achour for his first outing this year over ten rounds back in June.

Agree, I've never been sold on Murray as a top-level fighter. As long as Saunders doesn't have a bad chin then I can't envisage any problems for him should the fight happen.

Good point Marvin. Not enough of our guys fight abroad. At least George Groves gets his passport out once in a while.

Why do people think it's easy for British fighter to just up and move their lives to America?

Firstly, most British fighters have a local fanbase that they can rely on for solid support. They wouldn't have that in America, where the American fans will only pay to see you if you're an already established name.

That means a British fighter isn't going to be an attractive option for an American promoter simply because American fans won't pay to see them, thus they won't be able to match the money they earn domestically.

Murray probably can earn in the range of £10,000 - £20,000 in a non-title fight in in the north of England. No American promoter can match that unless they are on Showtime or HBO.

                    Good post.

99% of British fighters aren't served well at all by going to America. Hatton was the trailblazer but let's be honest, if he Collazo got that decision in front of 4 men and his dog in some backwater ****e casino it would have been a complete non-starter.

What would a guy like Murray do? Fight on a non-televised undercard.

                    Khan was the lucky one.
