Following a stellar performance in his middleweight match-up, a title fight seems on the horizon for Yushin Okami. Okami faced off against Mark Munoz (32, USA) in what may be described as a semifinal of sorts for the middleweight crown. Okami displayed strong takedown defense in limiting his opponent’s ability to turn the fight into a grappling affair. Despite twice being dropped from Munoz left hooks, Okami managed to dictate much of the stand-up with precise left-hand straights and right hooks in earning a victory by split decision on the judges’ cards.
It was a competitive match up, as reflected in the scores. Okami for his part revealed that he had some difficulty slimming down to the middleweight limit for the fight. “I had to spend a little extra time in the sauna at a nearby gym in order to shed off those final pounds,” he said with a wry smile. As it were, it seems probable that Okami has a title shot on the horizon next year; and yet, despite the potential of being the first Japanese fighter to become UFC champion, Okami is not preoccupied with such considerations. In Okami’s words; “If things are so decided that I receive the shot, I am ready to fight, and I train simply to fight.”
