  • Did Floyd Prove Rope'a'Dope benefits lower weights too?

I always thought the ropes were more tailored made for Heavyweights since there's more slack of an angle to avoid shots and an advantage of kinetic energy from ropes to boxer. Heaveyweights can do more things on the ropes.

Roy did this well also, however, the lighter weights seem to not benefit from this sweet science advantage.

I think if your shoulders are higher or same level as the ropes & good reflex than the rope a dope can benefit anyweight. Hell Erik Morales used to do it a lil.

None of them benefit from loose ropes.

the heavier your frame, the easier it is to fall back without putting effort while still turtling your guard. Lighter weights need more pushback vs the resistance. Ali vs Foreman shows the primer on to use the ropes well and tire out your opponent.

I like how pro wrestlers run into the ropes for the rubber band effect!

ali was on the ropes primarily because his legs had slowed down. you have to remember that ali had a hall of fame career from '62 - '67, the liston fight through the layoff after zora foley.

floyd was on the ropes against maidana for similar reasons. then he *cough* looked young and fresh in the rematch after hooking up with alex ariza

there's really no benefit to being on the ropes habitually. yes you can set traps, but you're better off not lingering there. it's typically a place where older fighters feel comfortable, because they can be tricky and evasive without using their old legs and draining their tanks.

floyd relaly only ended up on the ropes for extended periods of time when he was eithe rbeing held, or when he was older. jesus chavez kept him on the ropes in spots, but chavez went for broke and punched himself out completely within the first half of the fight.

Joan Guzman did it as good as anyone and he's tiny.

His legs haven't looked young and fresh since he fought Marquez in my opinion. His movement looked good and intelligent against Guerrero, but not fresh, he was just too many levels above Guerrero. He looked fairly quick against Canelo because Canelo is very flat footed. He used a bit more movement in the Maidana rematch but didn't look young and fresh at all.

The truth is Floyd was still beating guys and people don't want to admit that he's way past prime while doing it. not you specifically, just in general.

Go and watch his last few fights compared to the Marquez fight, that was the last time his legs looked like a young fighter.

Yeah, compared to someone at his level in Pacquiao, Floyd for once didn't stand out.
Last time he was out-worked at the lower portion was against Judah, ten years prior.

marquez was fighting two weight classes higher than he had been, and he was 130-135 on the week of the fight at the time when he was champion at LW. that floyd's legs looked young against a guy who was jiggling all over the ring needs to be taken with a grain of salt. marquez needed heredia to really "be a welterweight", , which i'll talk about later in the post.

was he looking prime against madiana in the second fight? no. but was he looking suspiciously better, considering that it was, IIRC, the first time he had hired ariza, a guy who has subsequently had a fighter [rios in the pacquiao fight] pop positive for PEDS?

the variation in the performance of floyd's legs, given that he had just hooked up with a steroid guy, are suspicious.

add in that he was popped before the pacquiao fight taking a lot of saline [this is a fighter who claims to drop no weight,] his behavior is highly suspicious. ariza also "consulted" with memo heredia, who was crucial in the grand jury indictment of trevor graham and balco

i also suspect manny was on something when he was with ariza. it's common sense to suspect one if you suspect the other.
