  • On this Day 1967: Ali Refuses Induction Into Armed Services

    By DAN GROSSI, ASSOCIATED PRESS

On this day in 1967, heavyweight champion Muhammad Ali, then 25-years-old, refused induction to the Army and then stripped of his title.

His refusal to serve during the Vietnam War made him one of the most hated athletes in the USA.

He rejected any overtures to be called Cassius Clay saying that was "a slave name. I didn't choose it and I don't want it. I am Muhammad Ali, a free name - it means beloved of God - and I insist people use it when people speak to me and of me. "

Ali said he was a conscientious objector and that "I ain't got no quarrel with those Vietcong ... no Vietcong ever called me (the n-word)."

Eventually Ali would reclaim his title and became one of the most beloved athletes of all time.

His stance against joining the army and refusing induction and being stripped of his title actually ended up showing how great a fighter he was.I mean, coming off a 4 year lay-off and regaining the title off the unbeatable George Forman and beating Joe Frazier 2 out of 3 fights that go down in boxing history.
