  • Sheriff David Clark accepts award from domestic terrorist organization against cops

In 2013, Clarke accepted the "Sheriff of the Year Award" by the Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association, a group of sheriffs founded by Richard Mack. The group is identified by the Southern Poverty Law Center (which tracks hate groups) as a "radical-right" organization.

Founded in 2011, the sheriffs association is the brainchild of Richard Mack, a former Arizona lawman who says he wants to organize sheriffs who understand their primary duty is to protect local citizens from the tyranny of the federal government.

"The greatest threat we face today is not terrorists; it is our own federal government," Mack says on his personal website. "If America is conquered or ruined it will be from within, not a foreign enemy."

In a 15-minute chat this week, Mack - or "Sheriff Mack," as he prefers to be called - reaffirmed these sentiments and went even further. He voiced his support for states to nullify federal laws they deem unconstitutional. He also called the U.S. government "universally corrupt."

The Southern Poverty Law Center - an Alabama-based nonprofit that tracks hate groups - has accused Mack of espousing "radical-right" views and trying to create a "nation of county sheriffs who believe the government is the enemy."

"I am extremely proud and humbled at the same time for this recognition by an association of my peers," Clarke said in a statement.

Then he added: "Have you ever been recognized by an association of writers as Journalist of the Year? If you ever are, and I read about it, I will congratulate you, not try to poop on your recognition."

Mack - who served as sheriff in Graham County, Ariz., from 1988 to 1996 - labeled Clarke "a modern-day hero" for his high-profile stance opposing gun control measures earlier this year. Mack said he had never previously heard of Clarke.

"I loved how he conducted himself on TV," Mack said, referring to Clarke's contentious appearance on Piers Morgan's CNN show in January. The sheriff was defending his radio ad encouraging local residents to arm themselves because of severe cuts in law enforcement.

This is not the first time Clarke has associated with those on the political extremes.

Earlier this year, the Milwaukee County sheriff did a lengthy interview on a syndicated show hosted by Alex Jones, best known for his anti-government views and conspiracy theories on everything from fluoride to the 9-11 terrorist attacks.

"It is astonishing that Sheriff Clarke won't distance himself from a nut that said, 'The greatest threat we face today is not terrorists; it is our own federal government,' and instead chooses to sling mud and come up with some silly political spin," said Moews campaign manager Sachin Chheda in an email. "It's time for Sheriff Clarke to go."

    So let me understand this.

Sheriff David Clark likes to initiate rhetoric against BLM for being a terrorist organization against cops all the while accepting awards and supporting a noted terrorist organization against cops?

    Interesting.

why dont u just call him what you really want to call him, an uncle tom?

Sheriff David Clark is the leader that the police force needs right now. all he wants is for anti-police groups to pipe down and he will do what he can to make sure that happens so he and his fellow officers remain safe.

He supports an anti-government terrorist group.

The Constitutional Sheriffs and Peace Officers Association sometimes puts police on the same side as "sovereign citizens," a fringe group that the FBI considers one of the most serious domestic terrorism threats.

Let's listen how the Sovereign Citizens group planned to kidnap police officers that pulled them over and execute them

Contemporary "sovereign citizens," who generally reject federal authorities, are inspired partly by Gale's rhetoric and partly by past bloody clashes between federal officials and citizens charged with illegal gun sales and ownership. Terry Nichols, who is now in prison for planning the Oklahoma City federal center bombing that killed 168 people 21 years ago this week, is a member of the sovereign citizen movement, according to the FBI.

That April 19 bombing deliberately coincided with the date of three iconic events in the radical right's historical pantheon — the "hot heard round the world" at the Battle of Lexington & Concord in 1775; a violent FBI battle in 1985 with members of an extremist Christian group in Arkansas known as the Covenant, the Sword and the Arm of the Lord; and the FBI's climactic confrontation in 1993 with religious extremists belonging to the Branch Davidians in Waco, Texas, starting a fire that killed 76 people.

Nowadays, sovereign citizens number in the hundreds of thousands, and U.S. law enforcement agencies consider them the top terrorist threat in the country, according to a July 2014 survey by a University of Maryland-led terrorism study consortium. At least 14 police officers have been killed and another 14 injured in 62 incidents involving sovereign citizens since 9-11, according to J.J. MacNab, a frequent writer on anti-government extremism who consults for government agencies. Most of their attacks are "unplanned, reactive violence targeting law enforcement officers during active enforcement efforts," the Department of Homeland Security said in a Feb. 5, 2015, report.

In one such incident, West Memphis police officer Brandon Paudert and another officer pulled over a sovereign citizen named Jerry Kane and his 16-year-old son in a van with out-of-state plates in May 2010. The duo had been traveling around the country peddling debt-avoidance seminars based on sovereign citizen beliefs. Kane had been threatening anti-government violence for years on his Internet radio show, and the traffic stop escalated rapidly into a tussle in which the younger Kane shot both cops dead with an AK-47. Police officers caught up with both Kanes hours later in a Walmart parking lot, where they were killed.
