  • Shoulder roll?

When shoulder rolling the right hand do you shrug the punch while keeping chin tucked or do you turn your head away as you shrug. Also is getting into a habit of just simply taking a step back a better defense of the Jab then parrying or even slipping while in the "Philly "shell.

You deflect it with your shoulder, chin tucked and usually look to counter with your own right hand.
Their momentum will force them into the punch when you've got your timing on point.
You are best to parry the jab as its easier to counter them, their balance will be off and its far less energy draining than using your legs or absorbing a punch on the arms, it will also make them weary of throwing it.

You can turn your head a little bit then come back with a counter

It's a good measuring tool. He's hit your shoulder with his right hand so he's in range to get hit

Keep your chin tucked against the right hand. For the jab sometimes a parry is good and sometimes a step back is appropriate, especially if you are looking to do a pull counter.

It's usually better to parry or slip a jab so you can have more opportunities to counter punch. If you retreat every time he throws a jab he's going to be confident that every time he throws it he won't get countered. Making your opponent think twice about throwing punches is a great thing.
