I agree that Canelo has been acting ridiculously over the past few years but sadly he is the Lineal Champion until he loses, or permenantly leaves the divison which isn't the case at the moment.

Chances are after Chavez he will be back at MW.
who could have predicted he would have fought chavez jr at super MW? he could fight zurdo in another "mexican super fight" or he could go back to 154 if he struggles with jr. who knows what ginger is going to do afterwards.

But he didn't fight Khan last. He fought Smith at 154 last.

The idea of permanently leaving a division is peculiar, and irrelevant. Canelo could fight at 164.5 for the next 10 fights then come back to 155. He would clearly not be the 'lineal champion' in that case, so there are rules set by each variation of the lineal title to account for this.

The title becomes vacant when a fighter vacates the division, with the definition of 'vacating' lying with the myriad of publications which follow their own lineages. It'd be interesting to see what CBZ, TBRB and Boxingscene have to say about it

He will fight either GGG (If he decides to take the career payday that's on the table) or BJS before the end of the year so that lineal MW designation isn't going anywhere.
Its like when Floyd beat Cotto and didn't defend it for years. He was still the lineal champ.

Oh you're right! I forgot about that!

Then you have a point. Interesting!

Lineal was always a good way to distinguish the best fighter and the real champ vs the paper champs and title holders, problem is when the old champ is no longer the best in the division (Sergio) and ducks the perceived best(GGG) to fight a WW who ducks the same fighter himself for money the status no longer becomes valid, especially when you fight at CW's and never fought any 160lb fighter.

The WBC belt isn't the Lineal title.

Did Golovkin fight anyone for that WBC belt? No, given to him.
Did he fight anyone for the WBA title? No, given to him.

Surrendered, you lame POS. GGG fans would rather he knocked out these chumps, but the chumps knew better. How do you live with your despicable self? You feel gross?

we are used to other so-called "champs" either vacating their titles or getting stripped for refusing to face him.

Other fighters still fight someone for vacant titles, they aren't just given them.

We will have to wait and see what TBRB and/or CBZ have to say on the matter.

According to some posts on this thread, Canelo will continue to be champion unless he 'permanently' retires the division, which is false. The title would become vacant if a fighter vacates the division, which Canelo appears to be doing
There is no hard and fast rules as it pertains to "lineal" titles, but I think a fair standard would be 2 consecutive fights outside the division and you have officially vacated it.

Why should everyone else in the division be denied the opportunity to fight for it just so the current "champ" can pad his retirement account?
