Schaefer: Alvarez-Trout 'looking good'

Golden Boy CEO Richard Schaefer has informed ******.com that he is "looking at getting everything signed" for a junior middleweight unification clash between WBA titleholder Austin Trout, of Las Cruces, N.M., and Mexican WBC counterpart Saul "Canelo" Alvarez for May 4 at The MGM Grand in Las Vegas on Showtime Pay Per View.
Trout (26-0, 14 knockouts) and Alvarez (41-0-1, 30 KOs) would meet as the co-feature to a defense by Floyd Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs) of his WBC welterweight crown against Robert Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs), of Gilroy, Calif., a matchup that was announced earlier this week.
"It's looking good for Canelo and Trout. We made huge progress today," said Schaefer. "I'm looking at getting everything signed. We're looking at getting it finalized maybe by next week."
On Feb. 15, the statement, "Canelo vs. Trout May 4 MGM," was tweeted from Alvarez's Twitter account, @CaneloOficial.
"I'm just waiting for the paperwork, but if they say not until next week, then not until next week," said Trout. "I've not gotten the official word, but I'm acting like it. I'm in camp and I'm game-planning for him."
Both Mayweather and Alvarez had targeted May 4 for their returns, in addition to each boxer having said that he wants to fight on Sept. 14. The dates fall on the two traditional Mexican holiday weekends -- Cinco De Mayo and Mexican Independence Day.
Golden Boy President Oscar De La Hoya told ******.com in an interview last month that he believes that a card featuring both Mayweather and Alvarez will surpass the numbers drawn by his split-decision loss to Mayweather in May of 2007, which set the all-time record for pay-per-view buys with more than 2.5 million.
A 27-year-old, Trout is coming off December's unanimous decision victory over four-time, three-division titlewinner Miguel Cotto (37-3, 30 KOs) at New York's Madison Square Garden.
Alvarez (41-0-1 30 KOs), 22, is coming off September's fifth-round stoppage of Josesito Lopez at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
