timur ibragimov beats wiseman dlomo for WBA pan-african regional title
by Pavel Yakovlev - (July 4, 2012) - Last week, Uzbekistan’s Timur Ibragimov won the WBA Pan-African heavyweight title by pounding out a unanimous decision over Wiseman Dlomo. The final scores were 117-110, 117-112, and 116-112. Dlomo, a hard-hitting South African, took a beating for most of the fight, but stormed back to rock Ibragimov in the tenth round. The match, promoted by Husan Shirmatov, took place in Namangan, Uzbekistan, and marked Ibragimov’s first appearance as a professional in his home country. Weights were reported as 228 lbs for Ibragimov against 280 lbs for Dlomo.
According to Russian media, the bout was gruelingly contested and featured several dramatic turns. Ibragimov dominated the first nine rounds, connecting frequently with rights to the head. Dlomo was cut over the left eyebrow in the third, and knocked down in the fourth. Rocked and bloodied in the middle rounds, Dlomo appeared headed for a certain knockout defeat. But during the mauling and infighting in the tenth, the South African connected with power punches, twice sending Ibragimov to the canvas.. Displaying impressive recuperative powers, the Uzbekistani rallied to win the 11th and 12th decisively. Dlomo was staggered several times in the final rounds, finishing the bout reeling and near collapse under Ibragimov’s attack.
Afterwards, Ibragimov credited Dlomo for being tougher than expected, but asserted that both knockdowns were caused by multiple punches to the back of his head and neck. Whatever the case, referee Stanley Christodoulou did not rule either fall as a slip, and administered a count both times.
Ibragimov has been fighting professionally since 2000, and is now 31-4-1 (16 KO’s). As an amateur, he was one of his country’s most accomplished boxers, winning the Uzbekistan national championship five times. Ibragimov was also a Soviet Union junior national champion, a Central Asian Games gold medalist, and a member of Uzbekistan’s 1996 Olympic team.
Dlomo, who resides in Durban, falls to 10-8-2 (10 KO’s). Known as “Sabalutho,” he has held the South African heavyweight title since 2011.
