  • Comments Thread For: Jorge Linares' Latest Setback Clouds Immediate Future

By Jake Donovan - Jorge Linares entered a Mexican ring to the beat of a Reggaeton duo live on hand to escort him into the ring.

Two rounds later, Sergio Thompson offered a beat of his own, with the sound and pound of his fists showing Linares the exit in the worst possible way.

A major upset occurred as Linares suffered shocking second round knockout loss against Thompson – a local underdog – in their Fox Deportes-televised main event Saturday evening at Oasis Hotel Complex in Cancun, Mexico.

The show was designed as a showcase to help Linares shake ring rust ahead of a planned July 7 rematch with Antonio DeMarco. Those plans quickly flew out the window, as Thompson had upset on the mind from the opening bell, if not his intense ring walk to the backdrop of a live Mariachi band.

Linares sought to establish his jab early on, but spent most of the round in reverse and not landing very much as Thompson brought the aggression. It was a wise strategy on the part of both fighters; Thompson did his best to force his brand of fighting, though Linares was disciplined enough to counter, including a right hand midway through the round that left his opponent wobbled.

As was the case five months ago, the sequence would prove to be yet one more matter in which Linares started but couldn’t finish.

The second round went beyond explanation. Thompson was a whirlwind of energy, to which Linares never fully recovered. A fusillade of punches left the former two-division champ to cover up without being able to offer anything in return to slow down the local lightweight. The punishment continued until Thompson willed Linares to the canvas. [Click Here To Read More]

Linares cant take a punch and easily cut probably needed a long vacation and think about his health. If he decided to continue he need to start from the bottom and up. One more lost means retirement. The stoppage was premature thou.

Linares is fun to watch the guy can box pretty good but he cuts fast and he's defense is not that good. The Mexican fighter last light wanted the victory more then he did. Linares looked like he didn't want to be there he didn't argue with the ref to try to continue.

nothing cloudy about his future. this kid is not going anywhere.

it will be monetary pull and the influence of power that keeps him with roach

you know freddie doesnt want to take up his time (which is finite, even he only has 24 hours in a day and 52 weeks in a year,) with a guy like linares who isn't going anywhere

Why is some people saying the stoppage was premature?, of both tv broadcasts (Azteca and Fox) none shows the cut. So how can they tell?. Maybe they were ring side. lol.

Linares said on Twitter he received 10 stitches so it had to be pretty bad. There's a thread around about it.

Linares needs to take a long break to let himself heal properly, maybe find something else to do during that time. And if he discovers a strong desire to get back in the ring, then do so. He didn't look like he had that fire last night, that flame seems to have been extinguished. He's probably mentally beaten up and thrown out of his game.

Take an 8-month break, find another trainer, take a couple tune-ups, and maybe he'll be rejuvenated.

Linares and Juanma need to leave for a little while and get their minds right, re-evaluate their careers.

Linares is too damn easy to hit
not good in itself, and especially when you cut easily
the guy has the skills to go far
but physically, he's frail and it's been proven a couple times now
Linares won't ever be a real world champion
he might not even get another title shot now
