  • Comments Thread For: Gabriel Campillo: Paying the Price for the Bad Calls

by Cliff Rold - Beibut Shumenov, quietly, continues to reign as the WBA titlist at Light Heavyweight. IBF Light Heavyweight titlist Tavoris Cloud is scheduled to make his annual appearance against Bernard Hopkins on March 9 in a big event.

With different officials, with what many would say were better scores, another man could occupy either of those spaces. All other things being equal, he could be one of the sports few unified titlists, maybe even the recognized best in the world at 175 lbs. Fate had something else in mind for that man.

Saturday night on NBC Sports (9 PM EST/6 PM PST), former WBA Light Heavyweight beltholder Gabriel Campillo (21-4-1, 8 KO) returns from injury and ignominious outcome for the first time since dropping a split decision to Cloud in February 2012. It his fifth fight since a dubiously scored rematch defeat that cost him a belt versus Shumenov, his second since a debatable draw against Karo Murat.

Campillo’s return will be widely overshadowed by a big HBO card. His pay will likely lag behind what a champion could receive. His opponent, Sergey Kovalev (19-0-1, 17 KO), is the sort of talented, high-risk, low-reward challenge a champion can wait on.

At 34, a top fighter’s window for accomplishment and savings deposit growth is typically closing. Campillo is fighting to keep his window open. He should have one if not two belts to cash in on right now. Boxing’s proliferation of belts may take away from their merit, but they maintain significant value as economic markers. Campillo, at #3, is in position to improve his IBF rating. He is unrated by the WBC, WBA, and WBO. [Click Here To Read More]

Looking forward to this fight. Feel really bad for campillo getting robbed aginst cloud and shumenov.
Campillo and kovalev will put on a show, their both highly talented and will lay it all in the ring. That's what boxing about. I think kovalev got to much power but shoul be entertaining.
Golovkin vs rosado is also to highly talented boxers who are hungry and willing to fight everyone. Great boxing weekend

In regards to the Chris John thing, look.. I can agree that the rankings could be shaken up a bit. Garcia is less proven than a Ponce de Leon, or a Jhonny Gonzales. But as far as skipping Chris John? Who cares?

Instead of fighting rated guys, he fights unrated cab drivers, or wastes everybody's time calling out Juan Manuel fuc**ng Marquez at a catch weight of 135lbs in 2013! He DESERVES to be skipped.

People say he gets paid well to fight at home. I dont give a sh** if he fights at home, but atleast import some real fighters over there to face. You couldnt get Billy Dib over there? Caballero when he was at that weight? If the money is so good share the wealth and get some real damn fighters in the ring with you. What has he done outside of Rocky Juarez and JMM?

Skip him. and keep skipping him til he fights someone, drops out of the top 10, or retires.

I don't entirely disagree. It's a matter of the who here. John's comp has been much less than it could be. It hasn't been as awful as some would allege. Yordan is currently in the top ten at Ring and John beat him soundly and recently. Garcia has ZERO wins against their top ten. There's no excuse for Salido-Garcia being for their vacant title.

We saw how badly Cloud handles a good boxer, with Campillo beating him at least 8 rounds to 4. Yes, the Pacman/Bradley decision was worse, but still this was a serious robbery. Hopefully Campillo gets things turned around. He certainly deserves it. But just when are the corrupt judges/bad decisions going to end? Seems like they keep getting worse and more outrageous. That needs to end.
