Let's say he does win his next fight. With the end of Floyd's undefeated streak and his biggest selling point and Manny slipping boxing would be without its 2 biggest stars but we'd have a new 1. Does Canelo have the goods to carry the sport forward like other big names before him. I'm worried he won't cross over with the American audience because of the language barrier. It hurts JMM and pervious Mexican stars like MAB and Erik. We need known names to help generate interest in the sport and Canelo for all the love he gets in his home country and from some die hard fans is either a curiosity or a complete unknown to the non boxing public.

Can Canelo carry boxing?

Not on his own...no way. Adrien Broner and a heavyweight like Fury or Wilder need to come through as well. Unfortunately HBO's decision to drop GBP is going to hurt Canelo, Wilder, Broner, and boxing as a whole.

The only potential star besides Canelo is Deontay. If America has a unified hw champ that will bring attention to the sport.

Dang! Time goes by fast man. Mayweather and Pacquiao on their way out as the last PPV big # guys. Both had their "IN" with the De La Hoya fight to the mainstream (USA culture) as household common names.
Canelo is going to get his "in" vs Mayweather BUT...I'm afraid his background / personality isn't unique. Like Mayweather has his ****y/undefeated attitude and talk a big game, while Manny was the first Filipino to become a big-time athlete with the whole country depending on him to win.
Canelo needs some sort of unique story about him...AND also needs to learn English lmao (if he wants to make big bucks in USA)
