I feel like we're living in a state of nostalgic appreciation for the old Britannia that no longer exists. Like people are living off the fumes of past greatness and deluding themselves from reality.

This is true. All these immigrants we're complaining about are from the countries we took from their grandparents.
In the post war years we encouraged empire citizens to come and help rebuild britain. No mention of them ever returning home again.

The Longsight area in particular is quite diverse to say the least. Although it all tends to get exaggerated. It's mainly the poor areas of a city that people complain about.
