  • Can someone sell me on Golovkin? What's the hype about?

I've seen him fight and he seems decent, but why am I not buying into the hype? He had a good amateur background, but what makes GGG special? The man is what 31 and being groomed like an up and comer at that age? He's beating guys that are C class fighters like Rosado and Ishida and his biggest win is against a European fighter named Proksa. He's beaten fighters in Japan and Europe, but I don't understand why people treat him as if he is P4P already? Kid Chocolate has a better resume than Golovkin. He would seem impressive with the class of fighters he's beaten if he were in his early 20's, but he's in his 30's. Even if Golovkin beats Macklin that still doesn't put him over Kid Chocolate.

    Kid Chocolate's last five fights:
    Fernando Guerrero 25-1-0
    Hassan N'Dam 27-0-0
    Winky Wright 51-5-1
    Craig McEwan 19-1-0
    Jason LeHoullier 21-5-1

    Golovkin's last five fights:
    Nobuhiro Ishida 24-8-2
    Gabriel Rosado 21-5-0
    Grzegorz Proksa 28-1-0
    Makoto Fuchigami 19-6-0
    Lajuan Simon 23-3-2

You have to remember GGG was literally ducked by guys. Felix Sturm and Ndam both blatant ducks. Sturm even paid hundreds of thousands of dollars to the WBA to not fight his mandatory.

So while his resume as a pro is a bit thin it's because no one would fight. He was a very good amateur beat guys like Bute, Andre Dirrell, Andy Lee, etc.

What was Sturm's excuse to pay the WBA?

Golovkin is the real deal. He is an offensive monster. The way he cuts the ring off so effortlessly gliding across the ring is remarkable to watch.

He get's hit but people make so much about him taking a shot or two. When you are as aggressive as he is you are bound to get hit. But he has never been down ever in the pros or amateurs so it has not really been an issue.

He's never really been in with a tested puncher yet. Proksa fought who?

He had about 300 amateur fights and was never knocked down.

Also just watch him fight he does a lot of subtle and crafty things in the ring and uses a powerful jab. Think Rigondeaux for a second. Everyone knew he was a great fighter despite only beating guys like Rico Ramos. Rigo past the eye test plus had the amateur credentials, he just needed a big name to prove it on the pro level which he did against Donaire. Golovkin is similar in that sense. Macklin is a solid test and will hopefully show the world just hoe good he is.

He has a lot of entertainment value due to his style and punching power, and he's one of the more well-rounded pressure fighters currently. His extensive amateur background shows that he's much more experienced than his contemporaries, even-though he's still unproven in the pro ranks. His fight vs. Macklin will be his first test. It's unfortunate that he won't be able to fight Quillin though cuz those are the two biggest punchers at MW. I do think 3G is better than Quillin, but he has to prove it.
