Maris also traveled more and played night games, which probably offset the 8 games. Baseball was also a much much better game by the time of Mantle and Maris than when Ruth played.

Bonds is a cheat though, plain and simple.

Hank never hit more then 47 homeruns in a season, which is tied for 73rd all time. He was the epitome of consistant tho

Barry Bonds was an ATG without the steroids. When he was relatively skinny, he already had 400+ home runs. He got greedy and wanted more and now he's seen as a cheat in general, when he didn't cheat his whole career, he started cheating in early 2000s. But he was already on his way to the HOF pre-PED's.

If anything, he ruined himself as an all around player when he got big. You could tell, in 1999+, his stolen bases dropped dramatically. He became bigger and slower and only good at batting. Before that he was good at EVERYTHING.
