It was step aside to allow Tyson-Sheldon, after that negotiations would start for Tyson-Lewis, which they did. If they didnt pay him Lewis most likely would of took out another court case against them, which would of cost them more time

It doesnt matter against Bruno he would of been entitled to 20% also

      lol
And you conveniately forget to mention the fact that Vitali took the wbc to court to force Lewis to defend his belt against him
Boxing is preparing itself for another round of damaging publicity after Vitali Klitschko filed suit against the World Boxing Council in Las Vegas after Lennox Lewis scuppered his opportunity of challenging for the heavyweight title.

Klitschko is the number-one ranked contender for the WBC heavyweight championship title currently held by Lewis.

A fight originally scheduled for April in the US on the cards - until Lewis pulled out.

It paved the way for Lewis to take the far more lucrative route to a June rematch with Mike Tyson.

The lawsuit notes that World Boxing Council rules require all champions recognised by the WBC, including Lewis, to make at least one yearly mandatory defence against the highest-ranked official challenger - in this case Klitschko.

Under those rules, Lewis is obliged to make a 'mandatory' defence of his title by June 8.

Klitschko's complaint states that he has "repeatedly demanded that the WBC comply with its own rules" and take the steps necessary to bring about a Klitschko-Lewis bout.

But, says the complaint, his "demands have fallen on deaf ears. WBC has refused and is refusing to formally notify Lewis of his mandatory defense obligation".

The court filing notes that news reports and statements by those close to Lewis reveal that Lewis "intended to fight Mike Tyson for a second time in mid-June 2003, without having previously defended his heavyweight championship title against (Klitschko) or anyone else within the one year period following June 8, 2002".

Ron DiNicola, who represents Klitschko, said the complaint asks the federal court to compel the WBC to follow its own rules and constitution and to arrange a championship title bout between Lewis and Klitschko.

Klaus-Peter Kohl: “That’s nonsense. There is no such procedure. We received the confirmation of the WBC in writing. In addition we have a contract with Mr. Lewis for a fight on either April 12 or April 19 in the US. If Lewis doesn’t defend his title against Vitali until June the WBC has to declare the title vacant.”

Dr. Vitali Klitschko personally sued the WBC at a civil court in Nevada. There is no decision of the court so far.

Lewis misses WBC deadline for fight plans

LAS VEGAS -- Lennox Lewis is still looking to fight June 21. Still to be decided is his opponent, and whether Lewis will even have a title to defend.

Lewis missed a Tuesday deadline set by the WBC to clarify his plans. He is negotiating to fight Kirk Johnson on June 21, while pursuing legal action to keep the WBC from stripping him for not fighting top-ranked Vitali Klitschko.

Mercer and his manager, Marc Roberts, the chairman of Worldwide Entertainment & Sports, said they were offering Lewis $20 million to fight Mercer.

Mercer has agreed to forgo his entire purse with the stipulation that Lewis, should he lose to Mercer, will donate $10 million to Project Pride in Newark, which is Mercer's favorite charity.

Mercer and Lewis fought last year at Madison Square Garden and Lewis won a controversial majority decision.

''Everybody who saw the fight knows that Ray won the fight,'' Roberts said yesterday. ''Ray just wants the opportunity to whip Lennox Lewis again. He doesn't even want the money. He'll fight him any place, any time. We're ready to wire the money to an escrow account as soon as Lewis agrees to the fight.''

        • The fact that Holmes was never stopped before OR after Tyson fight is impressive and a testament to Tysons punching power. He also beat legit former heavyweight champions Tony Tucker, Pinkleton Thomas, Trevor Berbick, and Razor Ruddock twice, Andrew Golota (who was on steroids at the time) and I think the 2 obliteration's of Frank Bruno were also very impressive.

          • On paper it would be Larry Holmes but for the fact that Larry came out of retirement to take the fight on such short notice.

Personally I was pretty impressed with the quick KO of Trevor Berbick and the win over Pinklon Thomas. Everything after seemed anticlimactic.

            • Michael Spinks imo. To blow through a guy like that who went the distance twice with Holmes was unreal.

              • probably spinks or Ruddock sadly. mike gets his praise for being the youngest champ ever and all those vicious kayos but his resume is quite poor to be honest. he was a beast tho at his best

hmmm,,,can almost excuse the vitali rematch to age but that mercer fight could have went either way and warranted a rematch. lewis may have dropped a peg on my list after reading that

besides the one armed cooney spinks never really faced any other big hitters at heavyweight. it was a good impressive win for Tyson tho but quite expected at least to me at the time. spinks didn't have enough to keep Tyson off or enough rear end to stay off the deck
