Rudy loved Notre Dame so much that it wasn't just a team to him, but a way of life. He was gonna do whatever he could do to be on that team. He did, when most people would have stopped trying a long time ago. Then when he got on the team he practiced hard all the time when really he had no reward. In being that he didn't even get to suit up and run out that tunnel. Most would give up then too because how frustrating would that be to give everything you had only to not be able to suit up. So in the end I think it was all the above you mentioned that earned his teammates respect and they were willing to give up their place so he could suit up.
I hate Notre Dame, but it's hard to not be inspired by that story.
