He won a close decision, Valuev couldn't hold that belt anymore, he was supposed to lose that for years.

Holyfield did better against the giant, and should try a shot against Haye.

Paul Williams didn't fight a seven foot ogre, but he wouldn't duck one either so...........lol.

I'd need to see a credible source for these punch statistics before I believe them. I still don't see how anyone could judge this fight to be that close though even if those stats are accurate. Punches landed have everything to do with the scoring of a round, not punch output. You score a round based on punches landed, effective aggression and ring generalship. Let's go through those criteria.

Punches Landed: In most of the rounds Haye didn't land that many punches (because he didn't throw that many), but he did land more than Valuev or in some of the closer rounds he landed a similar amount. Virtually all of Haye's shots were cleanly landed power shots as opposed to the majority of Valuev's shots which were grazing jabs, which count for less.

Effective Aggression: Valuev was arguably more aggressive, but his aggression was far from effective. He plodded forward flicking out his jab with little success and occasionally throwing a right hand with even less success. Haye was arguably less aggressive, but his aggression was far more effective. When Haye attacked he landed power shots that stopped Valuev in his tracks.

Ring Generalship: Who fought their fight the most? Haye. Valuev fought a frustrated and ineffective fight, while Haye fought to near tactical perfection. Most of the rounds were close up to a point before Haye took them with a good combination. You can win a round landing only nine or ten punches, provided your opponent lands less and your punches were effective.

I can see the argument that each round barring round 11 (Valuev's round) and round 12 (Haye's round) were close, but while they were close they were for the most part David Haye rounds. They add up to at least a four point lead for Haye.

What is this absolute nonsense about Haye 'not doing enough to take a world title belt away from a champion'? Are you saying that it would be enough against a fighter who isn't a champion? Are you saying that a champion should get the benefit of the doubt in tight rounds? If you are, then you are suggesting the sport of boxing should lose what little objectivity it has in points decisions. The fact that a title is on the line should be irrelevant to the scoring of a fight.
