i know i shouldnt have laughed but i found it amusing the way he ammounced he had chemical weapons.
yes we have them but we wont use them on our own people, we will just use them to defend ourselves against foreign forces if we are attacked (or words to that effect)

The world has always known assad has a chemical weapons arsenal. Also he is extremely unlikely to use them. This revolution is a Sunni uprising funded by Saudi wahhabism, backed by Al Qaeda and other Jihadists groups. Versus a secular nationalit dictator with the general suport of the countries minorities. Pick your poison really.

If Assad falls it will be the end of the imposing Shia arc from Iran to Lebanon but will also most likely bring in a more funddamentalist Sunni government in Syria. You will see mass persecution of Christians, Alawites, Druze, perhaps even Kurds (but they can hanlde thier business). A federal state is now the best option, split the country up along its original ethnic and religous lines.
