This was 10 world title fights after the Foreman fight with Ali massively on the slide. Punch resistance/reflexes/conditioning wane as you get older, its natural.
The issue of wear and tear as one poster brought up, but also the fact that Ali was using the ropes to roll with Foremans punches. He was seeing everything coming.

good points. foreman didnt hit ali as cleanly as shavers did. foreman did land some wicked body shots tho
2. Shavers hit Ali with a lot of clean shots compared to Foreman, who didn't land nearly as clean. Ali was less mobile and more hittable in 1977 compared to 1974.
Had Foreman landed a clean shot, he would've put Ali on his ass. But he never did, they were all glancing blows where they could do no damage, or on Ali's blocking arms against the ropes.

1. Shavers punched harder than Foreman
2. Ali was younger when he a fought Foreman and rolled with the punches better as his reflexes were better then
3. He did get wobbled; but hid it better by embracing the "dream room" as he called it. Ali got stunned against the ropes by Foreman. He got caught flush and knocked into the ropes by Shavers.

Foreman couldn't even knock down Jimmy Young after landing a hard, flush punch. I'd like to think a near prime Ali could take a better shot and would weather the storm. The only time he was 'put on his ass' in his physically matured version was when he ran into a flush left hook from Frazier. I could never see Ali running into a Foreman power punch.
