I suppose many people in government who are atheist are in the closet about it and keep it to themselves.

Rep. Pete Stark is the only nontheist in history of Congress to come out and say he doesn't believe and he got re-elected in California. So maybe that opens a slight door in religion not being an important factor in candiates.
