  • was lloyd honeyghans win over don curry a fluke?

that was the best he ever fought and looked great but when he faced lesser opposition he didnt look impressive.did curry just underestimate him or did honeyghan simply rise to the occasion?

While Curry might have underestimated Honeyghan a bit, he also fought the wrong fight. Curry was getting used to knocking people out, usually easy.
But there is an old saying in boxing "box a puncher, punch a boxer". On that particular night, Donald Curry tried to punch with a puncher!

Honeyghan broke Curry`s nose in the opening round then beat up the reigning champion.. it was no fluke Honeyghan was a very good fighter.

Lloyd got lucky against Don...... Honeygan never was abel to repeat that performance again. A one hit wonder, as people say!!!

Honeyghan certainly was no `one hit wonder`as you claim.. He was good enough to beat quite a few very decent fighters who was all at the Top of their Game.
          Maurice Blocker
Gene Hatcher (brutal destruction of genuine tough guy)
          Johnny Bumphus (hammers top prospect)
          Roger Stafford
          Sylvester Mittee
          Horace Shufford
          Jorge Vaca
Gianfranco Rossi (savage KO of future champion)
Don Curry (brutal beating of future IBHOF champ)

Give us a break! Honeyghan a one hit wonder? Have you seen him fight? Guy had serious skills and beat a lot of really good fighters. Obviously the Curry win is his career defining fight, and what a defining moment it was, but he had incredible skill, power and a lot of very good wins.

Anything but a one hit wonder as you say. He would dominate today apart from the very best and he hardly got lucky against Curry. He fought the perfect fight and while he didn't turn in a single performance that good elsewhere he was a great fighter overall that had many fine fights apart from that one.

Do you have anything else to add now that Sonnyboyx has kindly filled in some of the gaping chasms in your boxing knowledge?

Honeyghan was a very good fighter at his best, but Curry did have big trouble making weight and went some days without eating anything and just drinking tea to keep himself nourished. Honeyghan wasn't a one hit wonder though, good fighter, awkward with his movements and had good power.

A bit of both. Curry was looking past the Honeyghan fight towards a mega payday with Hagler. That is always dangerous, the fighter needs to be zeroed in on the man in front of him not be thinking about the next fight. He was also having problems making the weight
Honeyghan was a good rough tough awkward fighter who rose to the occasion. He saw his chance and took it. The headbutt that broke Curry's nose turned the fight. Honeyghan's head butting Billy Goat rough house style rattled Curry.
Curry was right on the cusp of becoming a super star,he had nothing to gain in this fight and everything to lose. The combination of Curry not having his eye on the ball and Honeyghan going all out in his once in a lifetime chance lead to the result.
