  • Boxing Styles & Brain Damage

I've been doing research on the subject and been reading the studies and articles on brain damage. One of the most important things I got out of it is the method that creates the most damage is the head snapping back. This got me thinking about how if there going to do research on this, they need to observe and put into consideration the extreme and subtle variables of this art.

Margarito and paquiao receive alot of head snapping punches. Even though they were successful in their boxing careers, their health department ain't looking to good . And also the warrior mentality of the two won't let them back down . The majority of pro's and amatuers have a style focused on the offensive spectrum of the art. Most athlete's participating in a sport involving them to play both offense and defense, the majority would focus on offense. In basketball , most players usually spend all their time practicing their offense and how to look good, while paying minimal attention to defense. The consequences for that might be getting crossed up or schooled and being look down upon by your team or coach.

Now, of course you don't play boxing. The consequences have an impact not on your social status or but on your life as a human being. Other sports miss that sense of life or death that boxing brings to table. For those who have gotten in the ring , you know how getting hit flush and getting hit on the glove is like night and day. Even getting hit with a jab snaps your head back causing some momentary loss of awareness.

If you watch most amatuer fights, the participants are most likely to be just throwing putasos with the chin in the air. In the pro's there is more strategy and tactics but technique wise , the subtle tendencies of offensive priority get most fighters in trouble. Majority of boxers get hit flush dozens of times possibly more for the brawlers with no defense whatsover.

But there are the defense first fighters. Those that focus on becoming impossible to get hit cleanly. I've never seen Joshua Clottey hurt, ever. His only knock down was a result of being off balance . His head rarely snaps back because of his simple but extremely effective defense. He's made alot of money while taking the least amount damage possible. From a fan point of view the Paquiao fight was a disgrace, but looking at from a scientific and health perspective, his head barely snapped back while Paquiao might have actually got hit with more flush shots.Hopkins is another example , he rarely gets hit flush and when he's in exchanges he like putting head down so if he gets hit, his head doesn't really snap back compared with that of a boxer with his chin up.

The studies they do on boxing and brain damage should have include a control group. They should have say a fighter who's very defensive like a clottey or hopkins ... and compare their research and exams to fighter's like margarito or paquiao. They need to come up with a more in depth conclusion on this subject. Instead of boxing causes brain damage , they need to engage the variables and styles of the boxers who receive brain damage. Boxing is a beautiful art and these researchers should stop being lazy and start putting in some serious work in their analysis.
