Or at least take a long time before they go down.

How can the human body take so much punishment?

Adrenaline and conditioning. Huge part is mental as well. Humans are fairly tough and if your mind and bodied have been conditioned to combat it's just part of the territory.

To answer this you need to understand how and why a fighter gets knocked-out or loses equilibrium.

Ill try to give you the short version of how it is believed to work.

The brain is made up of nerve cells call neurons.

Neurons are polarized, in other words they maintain a difference in voltage across the cell membrane with positively charged sodium inside the cell and also positively potassium ions on the outside..

There are less sodium ions inside than potassium ions outside giving the cells a electro gradient.

ion-gated Channels in the cell membrane then open up and due to the gradient thre sodium ions rush in and this essentials sense an electricla signla thourgh thte nerve.

Its much more complex than that but thats the very basic version.

So... Its believed than when a significant blow to the head is received it essentially knocks these ions out of place and so ther neurons in the brain misfire causing loss of balance, the knees to buckle etc.

If enough force is felt and enough nuerons are misfiring the brain will basically shut down as a self defence mechanism and this is how you get knocked out cold.

SO why do some people take more punishment thna others.

Well its partly genetics, some people have more of these channels maybe, they have thicker membranes, more ions more neurons.

Its also conditioning because in order to to recover the ions need to be blaanced out whihc needs (ATP) energy to do. So the more blood supple and therefore glucose and oxygen you can get to thre brain and the more stored energy in tissue you have the better you will recover.

SO thats basically why. Juts like some poepel can run faster or have better natural endurance becuase they have more mitochondria or more muscle fibers its the same with your brain. Some are just built differently but being in shape and hydrated and good diet all helps
