MONROE, Mich. -- Monroe police are investigating an explosion that happened in a vehicle near the intersection of Elm Avenue and I-75 late Tuesday night. It happened in a wooded area away from any homes or businesses.
Monroe police said this is being investigated as the detonation of a car bomb.
Police say the three people were taken St. Vincent Medical Center in Toledo, Ohio, where they were in serious condition.

Police say the investigation is in its early stages in Monroe, located about 35 miles southwest of Detroit and 20 miles northeast of Toledo.
An FBI spokeswoman in Detroit on Wednesday referred questions to local police and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. A message left with the ATF wasn't immediately returned.
