I often hear the expression that fighters of the past would not be able to cope with the fighters today due to a lack of size or they only beat "bums" etc however I feel that with the advancements on modern technology and strength and conditioning that those fighters would be even better athletes, both stronger, fitter and faster. What do you guys think?

No, every fighter under the age of 30 now think they are all Floyd Mayweather. They would never fight anyone of an older era because they would be scared to lose. Stevenson, LSC, Quillin etc.

That goes for every sport. 30 years from now no matter what sport the top athletes will be better than the top athletes of today.

technically and mentally they would be worse. trainers arent as knowledgeable today as they used to be and fighters arent as dedicated to honing their craft nor given the same opportunities to do so. people in general, fighters or not are just softer than people were in the past as well.
physically they may be better but it depends how far back you go. guys in the 80's were in better shape than fighters today imo. there was a good enough understanding of nutrition and the training was superior. they trained to fight with full emphasis on performance and building the body the right way. today you see all these guys who are big for the weight, ripped to the bone, bragging about their body fat percentage etc but come fight night they gas out way too fast.
