"Keeping up with the Donaires": Donaires fire back at Gary Shaw
    by Dennis Guillermo
    July 1, 3:06 PM

As of press time, the Donaires are currently in Las Vegas preparing for their press conference to announce "Pinoy Power" at the Hard Rock Casino where Nonito Donaire Jr. will face Rafael Concepcion from Panama for the WBA interim super flyweight belt on August 15. Also scheduled to fight is Bernabe Concepcion from Rizal in the Philippines against world featherweight champion Steven Luevano.

In this edition of "Keeping up with the Donaires" Rachel speaks candidly about his thoughts on politics and her fascination over bargain shopping. She also finishes strong like the world class tae kwon do jin that she is and fires a few solid verbal roundhouse kicks at Nonito's former promoter Gary Shaw.

Check out more of the Donaires in their official website www.FilipinoFlash.com.

Also, part 9 of my 10 year look-back on Manny Pacquiao's career is up, for those of you who have been waiting for it. (click here)

    Enjoy!

    Politics and Shopping

    Dear Diary,

Don’t worry I’m not here to announce that Nonito is running for any type of political assignment LOL. Lots of talks about politics lately so what the heck, why not open the blog with it? Okay, so I think politics is always a touchy subject so please understand this is MY diary and is no one supposed to influence you to do anything.

I’m going to take this down to the most elementary level I can think of, which is not elementary, it’s high school. Do you remember having school elections for student body? Do you remember what would happen if the most popular kid was the President? It usually blew up right in their face. Now I’m not saying this applies to the majority, but MOST of the time if we vote based on popularity and because they are “super cool” they cannot live up to what was expected for them to do. This is usually the case because MOST of the time, the popular super cool one is also the one who lacks proper education, one who has a low GPA, and the life experience isn’t one of directing or taking charge in that sort of atmosphere. For example, would you select the captain of the Varsity football team to be president? I hope not, because MOST of the time, that guy is failing his classes, classes that are necessary to make the proper decisions for the masses. Education is key. If one looks at the USA or any other country with a democracy, the individuals making key decisions are MOST likely to have a college education, to be well versed in any area of politics and debate. One must know what has been done in the past, what worked, what didn’t work, and also MAP out his/her plan. You can’t just say you’ll make it better and not have a laid out plan of how to effectively reach that goal. STATE YOUR PLANS not goals. I also believe debates bring out the character and motive of a person running for any election. It makes them state black and white, what side they are on in current issues facing them directly and indirectly. By stating it in front of your peers, it will HOPEFULLY remind you that you are giving your word to your people. The MOST doesn’t pertain to the likes of Pacquiao who has gone above and beyond all boundaries, all odds, and all doubt and has made anything and everything possible. Only God knows how much more he could do for the people.

Ok I’m done, what is the Tagalog word for catfish? Is it pusang-isda? I wonder.

So let’s talk about shopping. I know… I know… I’m super girly but I can’t help it. Know what I love? Bargain-shopping! I know, what’s the wife of a boxer doing bargain shopping? Well, I grew up in a very brand oriented household. My mom donned authentic Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Calvin Klein (very expensive back then), and the works. She’s a nurse and makes good money so she spoiled herself rotten- nothing wrong with that. I just don’t see the point. I recently complimented Jinkee’s dress at the Hatton fight. Her dress was gorgeous- and very pricey (as is I heard she also shuts down Chanel). She pulls out designer purses and watches galore- prices out of my range. At the Hatton fight I wore a dress I bought from Greenhills (a tiangge in the Philippines) which cost me P500 (You do the calculations). I accessorized it as best I could. I walked around weigh-ins with a Guess purse, bought not from Guess but from Ross (one of those overage stores that sell last seasons.) And then coming home and looking at the pictures and how happy I genuinely was, I honestly was proud I pulled-off the looks I did on such a small budget. I hate wasting money. Ask Nonito, I cringe at the thought of high-end Vegas malls. Designer this, designer that. I know that even, God-willing, Nonito does get up there in the world of boxing, that I couldn’t spend ridiculous amounts of money on dresses, purses or shoes…no matter how much money he makes! Why would I make Mr. Louis Vuitton or Ms. Chanel rich? What have they done for the Philippines for me to be their walking billboard? Think about it. We are walking advertisements! They should pay us for exposure!! Only very truly blessed celebrities get complimentary designer gifts to wear at the Golden Globes or the Oscars, but it’s for their label’s exposure. Even dress designers do the same. I would rather find some local Filipino designer that isn’t main stream and help them get put on the map. There are numerous designers that have worked with the likes of Beyonce, Madonna, and Kate Hudson that are FILIPINO. Those are the people we should be helping. Not some guy in a mansion in Italy.

Anyway, I gotta spend time with my mama. She spends half the week over at their lake house in Sac and the other half at their house in the Bay so when she’s here I try to catch up with her.

PS: Mr. Gary Shaw I have three points of advice for you. I’ll keep it short, yet sweet.

    1. When you say you don’t harbor any ill feelings towards Nonito, try to remember what you said about his ‘disloyalty’ after the Darchinyan vs Arce fight and that it’ll never happen as long as your Darchinyan’s promoter. Learn from the Reality Show “The Hills”. You can’t lie when they got you on camera saying it. Well, I guess technically you can, but it really just makes you look bad. If you tell the truth you wouldn’t have to remember who you told what lie to.

    2. When you say “No one is interested in making that fight happen.” Please replace “No one” with the word “I” meaning your self. You are a promoter correct? So it’s only one of two things: a. You as a promoter do not have the funds to pull off such a prestigious card since the lack of return profit on your MMA investment that went bankrupt (Elite XC) as well as running any show all on your own. OR b. actually that’s all, just a.

    3. And lastly, I would highly advise not to overprice your cash cow. Learn from the present economy, even Manny (remember the one that left you too? I would have some soul-searching if I were you or you might lose more friends) bought a house that was $9mil and went down to $2.5mil. So asking for the stars right now isn’t going to work. Overpricing Darchinyan just because you are trying to make up for the amount of money you had to forfeit to rebuild his confidence again, not to mention the money you lost in MMA, is a sad way of proving to others that you are scared.

    4. Ok Ok I know I said three but this one is a one-liner. Darchinyan will always remember his record is 32 AND 1.
