To pay the rent. A lot of it goes to help the poor and under privledged kids in other countries.

Why do churches take donations?

Because the church exists to protect its congregation from evil. Money is pure evil so the more money they can take, the better protected the congregation is. The church very selflessly and bravely hoards all of that evil to itself to save the world.
