German Jews 'inundated' with requests to join new Gaza aid flotilla

Jewish Voices for a Just Peace seeks second vessel, as dozens more activists ask to take part in aid mission.
    By DPA

An association of German Jews planning to send a boat with humanitarian aid to break the Gaza blockade is searching for a second vessel, given the high number of requests to travel with the group.

The group, Jewish Voices for a Just Peace, had originally planned to send one small vessel from an unnamed Mediterranean port in mid-July, with the intention of getting aid past the Israeli-imposed blockade of Gaza.

However, spokeswoman Edith Lutz told dpa that "our preparations have been held back somewhat because we have been inundated with requests to travel."

Lutz said that the first vessel, which could hold up to 14 passengers, was now full and that a further 40 German Jews were seeking to travel aboard a second vessel.

    A Jewish Ship to Gaza
by Jewish Voice for a Just Peace in the Near East
We are a group of German Jews who want to send a ship with not only daily necessities but also musical instruments to Gaza. We are acquiring a ship, loading it up in Germany, and then picking up passengers (Jewish and non-Jewish, German and non-German) at a Mediterranean port.

Among the goods to be shipped will be urgent necessities like medicines, baby food, blankets, children's clothes, and school supplies; art supplies and musical instruments will be also included. We believe that reconstruction needs not just cement -- we appeal to our politicians so Gaza can import urgently needed building materials! -- but also food for the soul. Our musical instruments will help contribute to this.

Our schools can also make a very significant contribution. Children in Gaza are prevented from studying due to lack of materials. That is why we are looking for schools to donate school supplies. Later perhaps we can work on building twin schools or classes.

Don't worry, someone will say it's just the evil zionists in disguise or something.

Every nation should be sending flotillas as far as i'm concerned.

        Iranian flotilla leaving for Gaza
        Published: 06.22.10, 12:51 / Israel News

Two Iranian cargoes of humanitarian aid for Gaza will leave next week and one of them will be shipped through Istanbul, the official Iranian news agency, IRNA reported Monday.

The announcement quoted Mohammad Ali Nouraee, an aid official, who said one cargo will be sent to Turkey, and then shipped to Gaza from Istanbul while the other will leave from the port of Khorramshahr.

Nouraee said that the ships would sail without protective security because the Iranians “do not want to fight", however he emphasized that "we are willing to become martyred in this way.”

According to IRNA, a senior official of the the Islamic Revolutionary Guards, Deputy Commander Hossein Salami, has said that escorting the two cargo ships "was not on the guards agenda."

In addition three Iranian parliamentarians are planning to visit Gaza through Egypt, Iranian news agencies reported Monday.

Lawmaker Mahmoud Ahmadi Bighash was quoted as saying that he and two other members of the Majlis, the Iranian parliament, would travel to Gaza by way of Egypt later this week.

Bighash said that some 200 out of the 290 Iranian MPs had wanted to make the visit but the three-man team will go instead. He said that the
Egyptians had expressed willingness to allow the Iranians to enter Gaza through the Rafah crossing.

Iranian MP Mahmoud Ahmadi-Biqash said on Sunday that the Egyptian government has agreed to issue visas to 70 Iranian parliamentarians who have registered to travel to the Gaza Strip.

The Iranian efforts to aid Gaza are inspired by the recent Gaza-bound flotilla, during which an Israeli effort to take control of the Turkish ship Mavi Marmara resulted in the death of nine Turkish activists.

Blockade attempt a success, only specific weapons now forbidden... what is the point?
