  • Comments Thread For: Kovalev-Sillakh: Michael Griffin Will Be The Third Man

None of the four officials assigned to the HBO-televised co-feature between Sergey Kovalev and Ismayl Sillakh have ever before worked a fight involving either fighter. However, at least one member of the group—the third man in the ring for Saturday’s chief support—has enjoyed an integral role in the championship run of the headlining act.

Veteran referee Michael Griffin gets the call to make sure all rules are followed between champion and challenger, in a bout that marks the first defense of Kovalev’s alphabet light heavyweight title.

Actually Kovalev scored 11 straight KOs (not just 6), because Grover Young took a dive in the 2nd round and was awarded a technical draw (as he didn't want to continue...)

Sadly impossible to prove given the dearth of fight footage showing the alleged 'illegal' punch, but having watched what there is in detail and observing both Youngs and Kovalevs reaction I have no doubt it's true.

Shame cos' without the Young 'draw' Sergei would be the current champion with the highest KO ratio in the sport. Indeed, had it been under the unified rules rather than under the Californian SAC Rules it would have been classed as a NC even if ruled an illegal accident and he would still have a 90%+ KO ratio.

Pity really, but not much to be done about it now.

Really shameful and embarrassing for boxing that rules that can make big differences don't apply everywhere on a fighter's record depending on the location the fights take place, it should all be universal if it goes on an official world boxing record.
