  • Tysons defence

Its rare you get a thread about Tyson these days and I think his defence is very underated. Even though he had a good chin, before douglas he had hardly been hit. Tysons bobbing style and pressure attack prevented any boxers to consistently tag him with jabs (Biggs, Holmes, Thomas, Williams, berbick.) Plus with rooney in his corner and the speed he had at the time, he was very hard to hit. A guy like ali would have the speed and eventually be able to time mike Tyson but I think for the first few rounds he would struggle to land. How well would he do getting inside these guys in there prime?
    Holmes
    Lewis
    Klitchko
    Ali

Underrated by some overrated by some.

His defence visibly decreased drastically after the first part of the fight.

He definitely was very elusive early though and generally quite elusive for the most part in his prime.

initiating a clinch isn't so easy, you can get caught very easily when trying and doing that over and over will get you DQ'd, not to mention mike would exact his own justice.

great vid halls of fame. mike and his coaches turned his lack of height into a defensive advantage. This coupled with great reflexes for a man his size during his prime year's made him an underrated defensive fighter.

Tyson didn't look to get inside; that was never his game. His whole approach was that first move and doing damage on the way in. Watch him fight. He slips, counters. If he lands, then he punches again. If not, most times he'll tie up, and he'll initiate the clinch as often as not.
He was hard to hit off that first move because that was his game.
