Geale, to this point in time, has never proved himself to be any better than Macklin or any of the other second-tier MWs below Golovkin and Martinez all these years. They've all basically performed the same while fighting each other.

The only reason this is perceived as a "step-up" is because Geale has that official win over Sturm many feel Macklin should have gotten. Honestly, if Golovkin looks bad or loses this fight it will be a massive upset and a horrible underachievement on Golovkin's part. This fight should never be in doubt based on Golovkin and Geale's past performances.

He's pretty good. Is he elite? No. But he's pretty damn solid.

How do you define good?

Within the division, sure. And Golovkin will deserve credit if he wins because he beat a top fighter within his division.

Let's be frank though, Geale is about average within context of the entire sport.

Geale is above average. He just doesn't posses elite power, but his engine/skill in close quarters is above average. Very solid fighter all around.

Daniel Geale is a top 5 MW and held the IBF and WBA MW titles at the same time.

Im not sure how some people here are calling him a bum.

He will be GGG's toughest opponent to date.

Who can GGG fight at MW who isnt called a bum then?

How many people at 160 are clearly better than Geale and why? As far as it goes at MW, it doesn't get much better than him.

Golovkin wouldn't get ANY credit for beating Cotto. He's already at the point where he won't get credit for beating anyone but Andre Ward.
