That was a great night of boxing. I arrived in Mandalay on Friday to watch the weigh-in. Unfortunately, I missed the Donaire-Montiel weigh in. I was thinking the main even fighters were gonna be last to be weighed in. But, it was the other way around.
Anyway, as I walked in Mandalay Bay, to my surprised I walked right past Juan Manuel Lopez on my way to the weigh-in. He is often listed at 5'7, but, he looked to be closer to 5'4. He was talking to two other dudes and I didn't have my camera(d*mn). Ronnie Nathanielsz, the infamous Pinoy writer walked right past me.
I saw Margarita, Jeff Mayweather(one of his fighters was on the undercard) and Sr. at the weigh in.
Crackhead Sr was his usual self, w/o the gutter talk, just jokin' around and doing a mitt session(minus the mitts) with a lil boy, a small crowd had gathered around him. I also saw Max Kellerman taking pics with fans, I was also surprised with his physical stature. I thought he'd be taller, but, there was something weird about good ole Max, how should I put this, well, his demeanor and mannerisms makes me think that he might be hiding in the closet if you know what I mean.
I also saw Margarita walking around the casino with his wife. He wasn't was big as i thought he'd be. I swear he looks like he wears the same exact clothes when we see him on t.v. He was wearing an affliction shirt and had his shades on. His wife is kinda chunky(not shapely)
Fast-forward to Saturday:
just in time for Melligen - Martinez(off-tv bout). I thought the fight was a bit boring and one-sided. Melligen is very vanilla, a 1-2 southpaw and that's about it. Martinez on the other hand didn't seem to have a gameplan and had no idea how to fight a southpaw. I had Melligen either pitching a shutout or close to it. Two of the scorecards had it a lil closer and the other was a wide UD.
I don't remember if the Melligen fight was followed by another off-tv bout. But, I remember how the Soto-Karass vs Jones fight went down. This rematch went down the way I envisioned it. Jones came out more composed and worked the jab tirelessly. Jones has one fast jab, it is his best punch imo. Soto was simply outclassed, I had Jones pitching a near shutout as well.
I don't think I need to say more about the main event. However, I did see Arce, Giovanni Segura and Mijares in the crowd. Funny thing about Arce, in all the wars we've seen him in. His face has held up well, unlike someone like Cotto who I also have seen in person and his face will tell you its seen better days, lmao.
After the fights, I saw Crackhead Sr walking around and a small crown of fans, Filipinos and Mexicans alike were starting taunt Crackehead telling Sr to tell Jr to quit being a p&ssy and fight PAC. They were also telling him to quit hiding behind the OSTs and fight. He just had a smirk on his face and just kept walkin', hehe
Overall, it was a good night of boxing.
