  • If tyson never fired Rooney...???

Do y'all think if he still had Rooney in his corner he would have lost to buster Douglas? How long would he have gone undefeated had he never fired Rooney?

    What do you guys think?

Rooney was the only trainer Tyson should have had. The clowns Don King put in his corner were helpless.

After reading his book, which i highly recommend, i think even with Rooney Tysons mental state would have been the same, and he would of been in the same bad shape he was for the Douglas fight.

With Tyson, his downfall was only ever his own fault.

There are lots of "ifs" that accumulated and induced Tyson's decline to just say "if Rooney was in his corner would have things been different. Ifs like if Tyson had not met and married Robin Givens,if Cus had lasted longer and not died,if Tyson had not got Don King wrapped around him. These bad influences that made a decline inevitable.
By the time of the Douglas fight the rot had seriously set in, Tyson was doing his own thing and not into being told what to do and being disciplined. So there is another if ,if Rooney was around him would he have listened to him?
If Tyson was of good character would have things been different. If he had a sense of gratitude and an appreciation of the the efforts of the original team behind him and an aversion to evil influences would have things been different. Character is destiny and Tyson was a flawed character and ultimately it was those character flaws that led to his demise and that goes way past anything Rooney could do. The original team was shoring up those character flaws and once Tyson had made he decision to go his own way with bad influences it was the beginning of the end and that happened when Cus died.

I know that Cus death had a huge impact on his down fall but Cus died before he won the championship belt at 20 years old...his skills diminished rather quickly when he fired Rooney...that's y I asked...cause not only did his skills go but his mental state was bad as someone mentioned

When are people going to realise that Tyson was a basket case and no one or nothing was going to stop him becoming what he was. The 'if Cus hadn't died' theories are the worst. Do people just want to ignore the fact that Cus knew about and actively ensured that Mike would never see any consequences for a lot of the **** he was already doing as a teenager?

Cus wasn't some kindly, paragon of virtue like Mr Myagi. He was like thousands of other coaches around the world who make excuses for the excesses of the talented young athletes that can bring them success. He didn't give Tyson the demons that destroyed him, but he is as responsible as anyone else for Mike believing that he was as untouchable outside the ring as he was inside of it in his prime.
