Why are people living longer and longer ?

When life expectancy is 30 or 40, it doesn't mean most people die at that age.

It's an average.

There used to be a lot of INFANT MORTALITY, a lot of babies didn't survive. That brought the average way down.

There used to be people dying of old age at 60 to 70 though. But modern medicine is enabling people who used to die at 60 to 70 to live on into their 80s.

Childbirth used to be very dangerous for both the mother and baby. Many women and babies died during birth.

Diseases such as cholera, Tuberculosis etc used to be fatal. Even a bad cold in winter or pneumonia was deadly before penicillin etc
