Of course if you train to box and you get into it with an "average person," by which I'm guessing you mean someone who has never had any combat training, then yes of course boxing would be effective.

Much like any other fighting discipline would have an advantage over an average person.

Especially because, in the USA at least, the average person is overweight.

cause the average person thinks they're an undefeated mma fighter against a boxer who is only limited to punches on the street because it takes years of hard work and dedication to kick somebody in the nuts or poke somebody's eye out.

This is the most effective thing to do in a street fight you only need one good poke and both eyes become useless even if you only poke one eye. :boobies:

Last fight I was in was a little over a year ago in LV.

It ended up with the guy bear hugging me trying to take me down, I pushed him toward the elevator. I threw a few punches while clinched but seems like every guy out there swears they're A submission specialist. No one squares up, they just go for the takedown.

I've always wondered the same thing. I've only boxed at a gym for about 3 months (and haven't been to one in about 6 months), but I've been training on my own, and I STILL have 10 times the training than the average person (still looking for a new gym, though).

I'm not even that great, but, unlike the average person, I know to keep my hands up, tuck my chin, always move, and block my chin when throwing punches, so I already have an advantage. I'd even go further and say that I'd even have an advantage over an MMA guy. If you keep your distance, use the jab, and use good movement, he shouldn't even have a chance to take you down. If he does, I'm not a small guy. I'm 5'11.5" and 210 pounds (not the biggest, but I'm <10% bodyfat and am MUCH stronger than the average gym-goer), so chances are, he won't be doing himself any favors by going to the ground with me.
