George Peterson updates Tris Dixon on The Punisher's progress

IT'S been more than a year since Paul Williams could feel his legs.

The former light-middleweight and welterweight dangerman, tagged 'boxing's most avoided fighter' in his pomp before Sergio Martinez blasted through him in November 2010 two rounds was left paralysed following a motorcycle accident in May last year.

'The Punisher' has been in a wheelchair since, but his fighting spirit endures.

“Paul’s doing fine," insists trainer, friend and father figure George Peterson. "He’s doing great. He’s in rehab every day. I just left him this morning and he’s going fishing. He went fishing last week and caught seven fish. The week before that he went scuba-diving, so he’s really active. There’s no doubt about that. Of course, his leg movement is not there.

"He still can’t feel them. There’s been no progress there.

"But everything else is working. His mind is still in tact.

"If you listen to him speak, he’s still got the same mindset. He’s ready to go. He goes to the gym and does his workouts every day. Every day he’s in rehab. He’s so positive. He’s not in denial, not one bit. He’s thinking he’s going to wake up one morning and everything’s going to be fine. And we are all thinking that."

Williams had just signed to fight Saul Alvarez a year ago when tragedy struck.

Alvarez now has the fight Williams long-coveted, against Floyd Mayweather Jnr, on September 14.

Williams might not even watch boxing's biggest fight this year, not because he's frustrated but through lack of interest.

Although he's attended boxing events in Georgia and Las Vegas since his injury, he has never had a great deal of enthusiasm for the sport.

"He never watched the fights much in the first place," Peterson explains. "He was never concerned by them, he just didn’t care for boxing like that. When it came down to training, he participated in that but as far as watching and watching boxing films he wouldn’t do that."

Williams is, however, able to see more of his children - a nine-year-old son and seven-year-old daughter, than he could before the accident.

"He is spending time with them but when he was on the road and in training camps he didn’t spend much time with them," George continued.

"They live with him and last week he was going to buy a video games console for his kids to play it with them."

Both trainer and fighter remain optimistic that Williams, 32, will rise again.

"The spinal chord was not severed, not at all. It was just badly bruised," Peterson said. "And a bruise like that takes a while to heal. It’s an internal injury and it takes a while. He will get up and running, hopefully some time soon, but whenever it comes we will be ready.

"He doesn’t let it bother him because he knows how to overcome that. He pushes himself in rehab, and he was always good at that. You can’t get a complaint out of Paul."
