Iran is a transitional/developing nation. Saudi Arabia is basically a "worst case" doomsday scenario, a veneer of wealth lording over a society as primitive as the subsaharan.

Obviously the real question is how much would the US be willing to do for the Saudis. In a hypothetical 1 on 1 war in a vacuum universe, Iran would easily win.
