Its relative affordability and abundance.
If this was the 1940's there would be no way in hell we'd have hundred of cans of food in our cupboards.
We're in a recession and I've still got tins in my cupboard over 3 years old that I'll probably throw away before I eat.
We're a spoilt generation and our attitude to food is quite grotesque to be honest. Hopefully I instil some better values in my kids regarding food than I have myself.

Yes, start the young. I try to preach to friends and family but they don't listen.
