  • Gene Tunney VS every lineal HW champ

My gym Mate says tunney could beat any HW champ in history
prime for prime, against every champ how does he do?
Let's throw Norton in there too for sng

Nothing Tunney did at Heavyweight could make me believe he can beat every lineal champ.

Obviously your friend is not on here but imo Tunney seems to be getting over rated quite a lot just recently, at least in my eyes anyway I'm just not buying it, sure he looks good on tape (of what there is) and got a few good wins but there is no one I would say is capable of beating every lineal champ, every style has it's poison and Tunney is no exception.

Your friend said prime for prime ?, so LHW Tunney beating all Lineal Heavyweights ?.

I agree with you NChristo. I think that most Heavyweight Champions would beat the best version of Tunney at Heavyweight. I'd take Louis, Dempesy (prime of course), Ali, Foreman, Frazier, Johnson, Liston and most of the better champions over him.

IMO i think Jersey Joe and Norton are two hellacious match-ups for him.

I agree with all of those names mentioned.

I also think Ken Norton beats him, maybe not Walcott though.

I agree with NChristo that he is slightly overrated. I know at one point ESPN had him in the Top 10 ATG Heavyweight list.

Walcott-Louis I makes me think otherwise. I don't think Gene would expect a bag of tricks like Walcott has. hell, Walcott had three bags of tricks.

            That's a good point.

Of course, the odds shift from fight-to-fight, but I will just post what I think is the most likely outcome, however narrow or wide. A, 'W' for every fight Tunney wins, an, 'L' for his losses.

              Wlad Klitschko - L
              Hasim Rahman - W
              Lennox Lewis - L
              Shannon Briggs - W
              Michael Moorer - W
              Riddick Bowe - L
              Evander Holyfield - W
              Buster Douglas - W
              Mike Tyson - L
              Michael Spinks - W
              Larry Holmes - L
              Leon Spinks - W
              George Foreman - L
              Joe Frazier - L
              Jimmy Ellis - W
              Muhammad Ali - L
              Sonny Liston - L
              Ingemar Johansson - W
              Floyd Patterson - W
              Rocky Marciano - W
              Joe Walcott - D
              Ezzard Charles - D
              Joe Louis - L
              Jimmy Braddock - W
              Maxxy Baer - W
              Primo Carnera - W
              Jack Sharkey - W
              Max Schmeling - W
              Jack Dempsey - L
              Jess Willard - W
              Jack Johnson - W
              Tommy Burns - W
              Jim Jeffries - W
              Bob Fitzsimmons - W
              Jim Corbett - D
              John L. Sullivan - W

I just couldn't conclusively decide how Tunney would fare against Charles, Walcott & Corbett (whom Tunney had the highest regard for). A draw seems fair.

That's a record of 22-11-3. I hold Tunney in high regard at any weight, if we're talking head-to-head.

I would love to see Tunney beat Liston, Foreman or Frazier. No way. No how.

As much as I respect Tunney's abilities Liston will kill him.
