                    Scales also refer to notes in a certain key. pentatonic scales are used alot in native music and in the middle east. A good majority of songs today use major scales, but alot of blues and rock uses minor scales or in a minor key. Basicly if you learn major or minor scales in any key on a guitar you can play along in any key by just moving them all down the frets.
