Windsor's John "Iceman" Scully, formerly a world class light heavyweight contender and currently the trainer of several amateur and professional boxing champions, put on a wildly successful amateur boxing show this past Friday, December 5th, at his Lion's Den Gym in Middletown, Connecticut.

It was more than two and a half years ago when longtime Hartford trainer Johnny Duke passed away at age 81 that Scully set off on a quest to have the park that sits at the site of Duke's former Bellevue Square Boys Club named after the Hartford icon. After collecting numerous petition signatures and frequently lobbying the Hartford Housing Authority to give him the go ahead to purchase a plaque to be placed at the site of the former gym in the Bellevue Square Housing Project in Hartford's north end, "The Iceman" was finally given the green light to raise the funds.

Scully went ahead with the only way he knew how. He ran a boxing show in honor of Duke.

Johnny Duke's daughter's were ringside for the action on Friday as were former Johnny Duke boxer's Anthony Taylor (currently a decorated Hartford Firefighter), Akwan Shabazz (1986-87 WM Golden Gloves champion), Hector Rosario (1987 New England Golden Gloves champion) and former featherweight Julio Acosta. Former area amateurs including John Decastro and Tim Casey (they fought each other back around 1982 at Holyoke in what was unanimously considered the fight of the year, complete with standing ovation) were also on hand.

Trophy presenter's for the night included Scully, former WBA light heavyweight champion Lou Del Valle, former USBA lightweight champion Israel "Pito" Cardona, former middleweight world title challenger Elvin Ayala, lightweight Adelita Irizzary and 1996 U.S. Olympic team captain Lawrence Clay-Bey.

And at the end of the night the capacity crowd had certainly gotten their money's worth as Scully's ten bout card frequently had them on their feet cheering. And in a fitting ending, it was the final bout of the night that had the fans on their feet cheering wildly from beginning to end. The main event pitted Scully-trained boxer Joseph "Chip" Perez of East Hartford against Julio Perez of Hudson, Mass and in a match that was worth the entire price of admission, Perez, the defending Western New England Golden Gloves Champion, came away with a unanimous decision victory over his naturally larger opponent.

Their bout was deemed "The Fight of there Night" and both boxers were presented afterwards with large trophies.

And when all was said and done the revenue from the live gate was more than enough to pay the cost of the plaque for Johnny Duke. The placement and unveiling of it at the Bellevue Square Housing Project is expected to take place sometime in may of 2009.

The craziest thing is...that trip to Vegas was closing in on four years ago and it wsnt until today when I posted this piece again that I realize that when I met Corrales out there at PURE, he was just 17 days past his AMAZING TKO victory over Castillo!

You mean McCallum????? As for Dec. 6... what can anyone say? Pacman really did something amazing...Oscar is past his prime, etc etc..but still, to beat him with such skills and style, etc...to force him to surrender, that's really something else
