I don't think compassion is possible without some sort of real religeon/spiritual teaching which invokes feelings of compassion, humility, honesty and feelings of brotherhood amongst people. Otherwise people are arguably worse than animals nowadays when left to live according to their urges of the moment and artificial ideals they have gotten used to striving for but are not in harmony with nature IMO. As far as science goes, maybe the real benefit of science will be that people in high places will use it to artificially bring out the qualities I mentioned in people.
