Oklahoma City Thunder superstar Kevin Durant has made no indications that he plans on leaving the Thunder when he hits free agency in 2016, but that's not going to stop the rumor mill from running rampant.

One such rumor: Kevin Durant to the Los Angeles Lakers.

While talking on Tuesday about Durant's free agency on ESPN's First Take show, Steven A. Smith said that Durant preferred the Lakers over the Miami Heat and his hometown Washington Wizards if he chooses to leave the Thunder, according toSteve DelVecchio of Larry Brown Sports.

"Regardless of how senseless it may (sound), in one breath I’m hearing that if Kevin Durant doesn’t stay in Oklahoma City, L.A. is his primary objective and landing spot as opposed to South Beach or even his home of Washington, D.C.," Smith said.

If this is report is true, it's interesting because, while the Lakers have still been getting meetings with elite stars over the past few summers, they haven't been able to sell players on a Kobe Bryant, Byron Scott and Jim Buss-led core.

Now, however, the Lakers have tantalizing young talent with the likes of D'Angelo Russell, Julius Randle and Jordan Clarkson. Bryant is on his way out in the next year or two. Scott could be fired at a star's request. And Jim Buss might be losing his power within the organization.

The Lakers have a rich tradition of winning, and someone has to take the torch from Bryant. Durant is the type of player Bryant would have no choice but to accept and respect. The two have played on the 2008 and 2012 Olympics squads together and are supposedly fond of each other.

That doesn't mean Durant is going to join L.A. -- the most likely scenario is Durant staying put in Oklahoma City -- but it's not entirely far-fetched either.

Durant will have the option to join basically any time next summer. The Lakers are not the only attractive alternative.

The Wizards were perceived to be the biggest threat, as they're Durant's hometown team and have a nice young core of John Wall and Bradley Beal, but perhaps we've been wrong all along. Perhaps the boogeyman that hangs over every major free-agent decision is real. Perhaps the Lakers can pull off another heist in 2016 and reload on the fly.

Until next summer, though, it's all speculation.
KD joining the Lakers would make them relevant again.

        Agreed. This is all speculation.

They predicted all the best free agents to go to the Lakers and Knicks and they did not go there at all.

Look at Greg Monroe. He chose the Bucks over the Lakers and Knicks because thats the place that gave him the best chance to win.

IMO, It's either OKC, Washington, or Houston.

          lakers are always relevant.

when they're good, the biggest story is "WHO'S GONNA STOP THE LAKERS?"

when they're bad, the biggest story is "WHAT'S WRONG WITH THE LAKERS?"

other teams might win the title, but the nba revolves around the LAKERS.

I am no Lakers fan, I don't like nor hate them. I would root for them over the Celtics. I don't agree with you on much. BUT, THAT LAST PART IS THE 100 PERCENT TRUTH. Whether the Lakers are good or bad, They are the gold standard of the league and everything revolves around them.

durant will go to the lakers.

young pieces at pg, sg, pf and c.

              russell 19, clarkson 22, browns both 2, randle 20, nance 22, upshaw 21, black 23.

kobe and hibbert are off books next year, so durant has option if he wants the lakers to re-sign them or not.

durant can also choose his coach.

durant already has a house in los angeles.

lakers had no young players and until recently no cap space.

next year they'll have tons of capspace and they have tons of young players.

lakers have 4 young guards, 2 young power forwards and 2 young centers.

all they need is a SF.

If the Laker young guns scrap this year I think Durant going there is a good possibility. The young guns just gotta fight. If they are at least competitive and not getting blown out all the time then Durant could easily see himself as the missing piece to get over the hump and bring the Lakers back to contender status.

I hope this happens. Keep your god damn hands off Jimmy Butler lol

Always makes me happy when Stephen A. Smith is called out for his bull****.

"I am good personal friends with Kevin Durant's family and was at the dinner table with them when he told me that he trusted me above anyone else to tell people he wanted to join the Lakers!"
